Our textile collections
The Burnie Regional Museum has an extensive textile collection including embroideries from school children to fashion items from various periods specifically the late 1960s-early 1970s. The image on the right is a sampler made by Joanna Smith, aged 8 years in 1840. If you are a descendent or relative of Joanna, please contact the museum via email museum@burnie.tas.gov.au we would love to hear from you.
Iris Bingham collection
The garments below are from the Iris Bingham collection. These late 1960s - early 1970s gowns and coat are fine examples of evening wear for the period. More recently the Collections Officer has made an application for the garments to be included in the Australian Dress Register, an initiative of the Powerhouse Museum, who are mapping Australian fashion.
